Abstract

Capacity building support of Fadama III was one of the components upon which Fadama programme was hinged. This study examined its perceived effectiveness among selected beneficiaries in Osun state. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 135 respondents. Data on respondents? personal characteristics, access to information, constraint and perceived effectiveness of capacity building of Fadama III among beneficiaries were collected using structured interview schedule. Data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistical tools at p=0.05.Majority (45.2%) were in their productive age (36-48), married (77.0%) and had household size of between 1-5 persons. Fairly large proportion (43.0%) had secondary education while 44.4% had between 1-7 years of experience in their various enterprises. Severe constraint faced by beneficiaries in various capacity building sessions was unavailability of teaching aids ( = 1.79). Knowledge acquired on sustainable land management ( =3.6), fish handling ( =3.4) and top-grade meat ( =3.8) were perceived as very effective by crop farmers, fish farmers and livestock farmers, respectively. There were significant relationships between respondents? age (r=0.193), years of experience in enterprise (r=0.643), educational status (r=0.621) and perceived effectiveness of capacity building. Fadama III capacity building component impacted positively on the beneficiaries in the study area. Efforts should be made to provide for both audio and visual aids to alleviate perceived constraint to effective uptake of capacity building efforts by project beneficiaries under the current transformation agenda.
